MP meets campaigners

Ascot Windsor & Eton Express: Friday July 25, 2008

Windsor MP Adam Afriyie has met campaigners fighting for sufferers of diseases which destroy lives.

Mr Afriyie met people fighting Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME) and Fibromyalgia (FM) at Windsor Youth and Community Centre, in Hanover Way, on Friday.

ME and FM are little understood illnesses that cause constant exhaustion along with serious muscle pain. He was told that campaigners had been promised a pilot scheme to help sufferers at the end of 2006, only to see it vanish when the area’s Primary Care Trusts were reorganised.

Eileen Shoosmith, from the Reading Area ME Support Group, said supporters wanted to see a clinic run by an ME specialist with an outreach facility for those who were housebound by the complaint, as well as a paediatric service for affected children.

Mr Afriyie agreed to write to the East Berkshire Primary Care Trust and encouraged sufferers across the country to lobby their MPs.
